President Dilma Rousseff quoted in her official speech Thursday (21/05) in Brasilia, the proposed free trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union (EU), which is awaiting approval of tariff offers. “I would also like to highlight the agreement with the European Union as one of the strategic steps in the international trade area in the region. Making the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union this year is the priority of the bloc’s external agenda”, said the president. The statement came after the visit to the Palacio do Planalto of the President of Uruguay, Tabaré Vázquez.
The president also said that there is a need to “improve” Mercosur free trade area, the economic bloc that includes Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina and Venezuela. She added that the group needs to “advance more and more.” Dilma said that during the meeting with Vazquez, they talked about the current state of the regional integration process and agreed that Mercosur “constitutes an important common heritage”. She mentioned that for President Vázquez, the “Mercosur must always adapt to new circumstances.”
For the president Roussef, the block is an “ambitious” integration of the countries that compose it and in recent years obtained “quite significant” results. Since the creation of the block, internal trade has multiplied eleven times, according to Dilma. The president emphasized the trade flow between the Mercosur bloc countries and stated that in 2014 exports and imports within the block last year totaled $ 52 billion.
Today, the government will announce a cut in the budget. The president said that this cut will not paralyze the workings of the federal machine. According to data published in the Brazilian media, this cut should be around R$ 70 billion, the largest made by Worker’s Party.
