EUBrasil association will hold an event at the European Parliament (EP), on 13 October, in Brussels, to welcome new presidents of the Delegation for relations with Mercosur and the newly created Delegation for relations with the Federative Republic of Brazil. They will be elected on the same day.
The event will be co-hosted by EUBrasil and MEP Nuno Melo. During the event, journalist Richard Lapper, director of Financial Times’ Latam Confidential, will talk about the results of the first round of the Brazilian presidential elections and what they mean for the country. EUBrasil’s president Luigi Gambardella will also take the opportunity to welcome members that have recently joined the association. MEPs and CEOs of companies with significant flow of trade and investment between Brazil and the EU have confirmed their presence at the event.
The Delegation for relations with the Federative Republic of Brazil was created by the PE last March. Before that, Mexico and Chile were the only countries in Latin America with exclusive PE delegations; all the other countries were dealt with as blocs.
“Relations between the European Parliament and Brazil have become bilateral, while relations with Mercosur are by blocs. This shows how important the country is for the EP”, says Gambardella.
“MEPs have been giving priority to the bilateral strategic partnership with Brazil”, adds Professor Alfredo Valladão, chairman of EuBrasil’s Advisory Council.
The EP’s delegations are in charge of maintaining and enhancing contacts with parliaments of States that are traditionally partners of the EU and, on the other hand, contribute to the promotion of the values on which the EU is founded, namely the principles of liberty, democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms and the rule of law.
