Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) Brando Benifei and Jörg Leichtfried signed in September the term of membership of the Association EUBrasil. Both Italian Benifei and Austrian Leichtfried belong to the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, and pledged to actively participate in the association activities within their specialties.
The eigth European Parliament was elected in the May 2014 elections, and the two MEPs will integrate the group of parliamentarians associated to EUBrasil. The number of MEPs that are part of EUBrasil has increased to 18.
Brando Benifei, 28, is one of the youngest MEPs elected to Parliament and is part of the Italian delegation of the S & D group. He is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and is very active in the promotion of active policies to fight unemployment among young people.
Jörg Leichtfried is Vice President of S & D Group and his work is focused on international trade. He usually actively participates in debates about trade agreement negotiations, transportation, tourism and animal welfare. He was first elected as an MEP in 2004 and after the European elections in 2009, became head of the Austrian S & D delegation.
“I do believe that in a more and more globalized world, cross-border cooperation is essential for overcoming major challenges. What we need is a strong partnership and engaging in the EUBrasil Association is a vital step towards reaching this goal”, says Mr Leichtfried.
EUBrasil members actively participate in meetings, seminars, and debates with representatives of European and diplomatic institutions, as well as of the productive sectors, the press, the Brazilian and European academia. They contribute with their knowledge to the discussions about the EU-Brazil strategic partnership in different areas.
