The names of MEPs to sit in Parliament’s interparliamentary delegations, which maintain relations and exchange information with parliaments in non-EU countries, were approved in a plenary vote on Thursday. For the new legislative term, Parliament will have 44 interparliamentary delegations, including a new one for relations with Brazil, as well as the one to Mercosur.
Next steps
Delegation chairs and vice-chairs will be elected at the delegations’ constitutive meetings, scheduled for 4 September (multilateral assemblies) and 1-2 October (interparliamentary delegations). Brazil’s president delegation will be chosen on October 1st.
Mercosur
This Delegation covers relations with the four countries of Mercosur: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Pending ratification of Venezuela’s accession to Mercosur, the relations with Venezuela are covered by the Delegation for relations with the countries of the Andean Community in cooperation with the Delegation for relations with the Mercosur countries.
Every year, the Members of the Delegation visit the region and receive visits from members of the national parliaments from the Mercosur countries and from the Mercosur Parliament (Parlasur).
