Mercosul meeting ends without an offer to the EU

The meeting on April 29th between Mercosur partners ended without agreement on the offer for the free trade agreement with the European Union. According to the Brazilian economic daily Valor Econômico, negotiators reported that Argentina has not yet adopted an attitude of openness of the local market compatible with the other partners.

It was agreed that another meeting will take place on 7th of May, by videoconference. The negotiators are racing to close a proposal next month. The Brazilian Government says that if the exchange of proposals between the two blocks will not made until June, the agreement will have to be for next year, since there are elections Brazil the second semester of this year.
